BMJ Case Reports Published online: 10 December 2012 doi:10.1136/bcr-2012007643 DESCRIPTION A 32-year-old man was referred to a radiology department for intermittent anterior knee pain and swelling for approximately 6 months. The patient denied any history of major trauma, fracture or infection. MRI was performed to diagnose the cause of knee pain. The axial view of MRI revealed increased patellofemoral joint effusion and the sagittal view of T1-weighted, and T2-weighted MRIs showed an oedema, increased intra-articular fluid and thickening of suprapatellar fat pad (figures 1 and 2). Also, oedema of quadriceps fat impingement is visible at both coronal and axial fat sat T2-weighted sections. Knee pain is a very common clinical complaint. Generalised pain in the front of knee has many causes. Numerous traumatic and non-traumatic processes may be encountered, many occurring relative to the anterior compartment, including fat-pad impingement syndromes. Three normal anterior knee fat pads are present at the knee which separates joint capsule and synovium; the

Fat Pad Entrapment at the Hip: A New Diagnosis
PURPOSE To establish if a positive impingement sign in femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) may result from entrapment of the fat pad located at the anterior head-neck junction of the upper femur. This fat pad is routinely removed before any cam lesion excision. METHODS We report a prospective study of 142 consecutive hip arthroscopies for symptomatic FAI where the aim was to remove the arthros...
متن کاملAnkle MRI for Anterolateral Soft Tissue Impingement: Increased Accuracy with the Use of Contrast-Enhanced Fat-Suppressed 3D-FSPGR MRI
OBJECTIVE To validate the use of contrast-enhanced (CE) fat-suppressed three-dimensional (3D) fast gradient-recalled acquisition in the steady state with radiofrequency spoiling (FSPGR) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the diagnosis of anterolateral soft tissue impingement of the ankle, as compared to the use of routine ankle MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS Contrast-enhanced fat-suppressed 3D-...
متن کاملAn Unusual Cause of Posterior Elbow Impingement: Detachment of a Hypertrophied Posterior Fat Pad
We report a case of a 47-year-old woman who developed posterior impingement of the elbow due to detachment of a hypertrophied posterior fat pad. She reported acute left elbow pain after leaning back onto a hard object with her hand and subsequently experienced a "catching" sensation. Comparison with the magnetic resonance images of a normal elbow revealed a hypertrophied posterior fat pad inter...
متن کاملInfluence of the infrapatellar fat pad resection in a synovectomy during total knee arthroplasty in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
Influence of the infrapatellar fat pad resection in a synovectomy during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) was evaluated in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Our findings for 120 RA patients at 28 to 38 months after surgery showed that (i) a significant decrease in the number of patients with anterior aching discomfort despite a lower-lying patella was seen in patients with infrapatellar syn...
متن کاملStudy of Coincidence of Hoffa’s Fat Pad Associated Injuries in Knee Traumas in Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Background and Objective: Hoffa’s fat pad injuries are often caused by acute direct and indirect trauma and chronic recurrent micro-trauma, and its disorders are associated with other traumas and injuries that have been less paid attention to in radiological studies. Therefore, this study was performed to evaluate the injuries associated with Hoffa’s fat pad injury in knee trauma using the diag...
